The Capitol Area Quarter Horse Association is proud of our annual scholarship program.
CAQHA invests in our youth by providing scholarships to eligible CAQHA youth members for continuing their education.

In addition to scholarships for youth, in 2022 CAQHA will be offering grants to worthwhile non-profits who work with horses.

Without a doubt our favorite annual event is the presentation of scholarships awarded to our CAQHA youth! Two of our 3 recipients for 2020 were presented with their $1,000 scholarships at our Ranch Horse Show on Saturday, June 13.

Gracie Moreland, a recent high school graduate with a 4.0 GPA, has been a part of CAQHA since 2016. In addition to participating in our shows, Gracie has served on our Youth Advisory Committee since 2018 as well as worked as a volunteer at our shows. In addition to volunteering with CAQHA, Gracie volunteers for LOPE (Lonestar Outreach to Place Ex-Racers), a Central Texas non-profit that specializes in rehabilitating ex racehorses for adoption and educating teens on natural horsemanship. Gracie will be attending Colorado State University in the fall majoring in Environmental Science and Sustainability. She will remain involved with horses as she recently started her 3 year old Quarter Horse youngster and ‘Mae’ will travel to Colorado with Gracie to continue riding and groundwork training.

Luke Haydon, a Junior at Texas A & M University – Kingsville, is the recipient of our $1,000 Service and Legacy Scholarship. Luke has been a member, exhibitor and volunteer with CAQHA since he was 8 years old. He continues to compete and volunteer at our Ranch Horse Shows where we now have him doing the heavy lifting duties like carrying logs, bridges and gates for our trail patterns. At TAMUK Luke volunteers with the collegiate rodeo team and when home in Marble Falls he volunteers with the Burnet County 4- Horse Club. Luke will graduate in 2021 with a BS in Agribusiness and a minor in Military Science and Marketing. At graduation he will be commissioned into the United States Army as a 2nd Lieutenant with plans to attend aviation school and become an Army pilot. Once his time with the military is completed, he plans to return to the civilian world as an Ag Lender or Ag Economist helping businesses, ranchers and farmers.

Sabine Lazo - This young dynamo started her show career with CAQHA in our Walk-Trot classes.  “I remember my first show competing in walk-trot-canter classes was at CAQHA.  I remember my first high point award outside of the walk-trot, also at CAQHA!  I remember switching horses, arenas, and divisions, and growing both as an equestrian and a person, all with the wonderful horses and people that make CAQHA such an invaluable asset to all its members and especially its youth.  I’ve learned from my fellow competitors in CAQHA, humans and equines alike, from the tiniest leadliners to the show ring veterans.  Over the years, they have taught me sportsmanship, humility, diligence, and kindness, and have become an extended family which I know I can rely on for wisdom and support.”  As one of CAQHA’s long time volunteers, Sabine begin helping at our shows at a very young age well as doing a great deal of behind the scenes work as a member of our Youth Advisory Committee during her high school years.   Giving back is a part of Sabine’s DNA!  Between assisting at school, nursing home functions, volunteering regularly with Bluebonnet Equine Humane Society, assisting with 4H, FFA and equine organizations including serving as the President of the American Junior Paint Horse Association (where she was honored as the 2019-2020 Youth Member of the Year), Sabine amassed nearly 500 community service hours just in her high school career.  Academically Sabine earned valedictorian honors and views her studies “not as a chore, but as an opportunity”.  She will pursue a Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication Studies with a minor in Business, Political Science or Spanish at Sam Houston State University where she was accepted into the Elliot T. Bower’s Honors College on an honors merit scholarship.  Sabine adds,  “Former US President John Adams once said, ‘There are two types of education.  One should teach us how to make a living, and the other how to live.’  As I begin my education on how to make a living, I won’t be abandoning my education on how to live.  CAQHA has impressed upon me the importance of service and I will continue to volunteer and donate my time and effort to a variety of organizations, both equine and otherwise, throughout my time in college.”  Sabine is already doing just that - now serving as one of our newest (and youngest) CAQHA Board Members!

Congratulations to all three of these outstanding young adults!
